Binge-Eating Disorder
Binging not followed by any purging or weight loss behaviours, typically associated with obesity
DSM-5 Criteria
A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating
- Eating a huge amount of food in too short a time
- Lack of control over what/how much you’re eating
B. 3+ of the following
1. Eating faster than usual
2. Eating until uncomfortably full
3. Eating large amounts of food despite not being hungry
4. Eating alone due to embarrassment of quantity of food
5. Feelings of disgust, guilt & depression afterwards
C. Distress at binge-eating
D. Once a week, 3+ months
E. No form of purging
Prevalence
2% of population
Medication
- Antidepressants
- Appetite suppressants
- Anticonvulsant medications
- Medications that inhibit serotonin & norepinephrine
Therapies
- Interpersonal psychotherapy and CBT were more effective than behavioural weight loss (prescribed exercise & dieting) over time
- None were hugely effective
- IPT had the lowest drop out rate
