2b) Weld Joints In Flat Position Flashcards
Initial weld pass that provides complete penetration through the thickness of the joint
Root pass
Short sections of beads 1/4” to 1/2” long which are used to maintain the proper position and root opening between the metal being welded
Tack weld
Fills the remaining portion after the root pass
Fill or filler joints
additional reinforcement to the weld and gives it a nice appearance , should not extend above the plate surface by 1/16”
Cap or cover pass
Edges of the 2 plates are in direct contact with each other
Closed butt joints
Placed apart with a root opening 3/32” to 1/8” , back up strip or block is normally used underneath the joint
Open butt joint
Commonly used when fabrication straight and rolled shapes
T joints
For tapping method, scratching method how high should u raise the electrode to preheat the metal
3/8” to 1/2” then lower to a distance equal to the diameter of the electrode
Work and travel angles for a short bead in flat position
15-25 degrees in travel angle and 90 degrees work angle
Work and travel angles for a butt joint in a flat position
15-30 degrees in travel and 90 degrees in work angle
Work and travel angles for a lap/T in flat position
30 degrees in travel and 1st-45 2nd- 70 3rd-30 degrees in work angle
