2B Nervous system Flashcards
What is the point of the nervous system?
It is responsible for controlling all our thoughts and actions and protecting us from danger
How does the nervous system protect us from danger?
1.recognising a change to the environment
2.sending a message about it (ball being thrown)
3.processing information(this will hurt me)
4.then telling the body what to do(duck)
What are the two systems that the nervous system is split in
The central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
PERIPHERAL MEANS AWAY FROM CENTRE
What are receptors
They are structures found on neurons and detect stimuli. something that triggers a response
How are nervous system messages transmited
Through nerves
What are the two types of nerves
Sensory and motor
What do sensory nerves do
Sensory nerves pass sensory information from receptors onto the CNS.
What does the motor nerves do?
nerves carry info from the CNS to the body to enable movement in the desired organ (called the effector).
What are nerves made out of?
they are made out of neurons that align end to end to transmit electrical signals between PNS AND CNS
Why do neurons have long bodies and alot of receptors?
To allow for fast transmission
What is between neurons
Synapses
What are neurotransmitters
Chemicals the are released between the neurons that carry the signal across that triggers an electrical signal to the next neuron
How many major lobes are there in the brain?
6
What does the frontal lobe do?
- decision-making
- problem-solving
- reasoning
- impulse control - choosing good and bad
What does the temporal lobe do?
interpretation of sound
language comprehension
processing emotions
visual memory
