2b Group 7 Flashcards
What is a displacement reaction?
When an element of higher reactivity displaces an element of lower reactivity in its compound
What colour is chlorine solution?
colourless
What colour is bromine solution?
Orange
What colour is iodine solution?
Violet
What is the aqueous layer?
It’s the bottom layer
Which halogen will always end up in a compound?
The more reactive of the 2 halogens will always end up in the compound in a chemical reaction - gives a distinct colour (displaced halogen)
Which halogen remains in the cyclohexane layer after the reaction has occured?
The displaced halogen
Does Iodine displace sodium bromide?
No
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction in which both oxidation and reduction occur
Does chlorine displace sodium bromide?
Yes - it becomes sodium chloride
Does chlorine displace sodium iodide?
Yes
Does bromine displace sodium chloride?
No - as bromine is lower down group 7 than chlorine is
Does bromine displace sodium iodide?
Yes
Does iodine displace sodium chloride?
No
What is OILRIG?
Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons
