2b: Cell structure Flashcards
What are the basic structure found in both animal and plant cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It surrounds the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains the the genetic material in the chromosomes. These control how the cell grows and works. The nucleus also controls cell division.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It contains many small organelles and is where most of the many different chemical processes happen.
What structures are found in plant cells, but not in animal cells?
Chloroplasts, permanent vacuole and cell wall.
What is the function of the chloroplast
Contain the green pigment, chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy and uses it to power the process of photosynthesis, which produces nutrients for the plant.
What is the function of the permanent vacuole?
A large storage compartment for cell sap, which contains sugars and other molecules as well as water. The vacuole is also important in supporting the cell’s structure.
What is the function of the cell wall?
Made of cellulose, the cell wall of plants supports the cell and helps to maintain its shape.
