2.A3-periglacial Processes Produce Distincitve Landscpaes Flashcards
What is continuous permafrost ?
Forms in the coldest areas of the world where mean annual air temperatures are below -6C. It can extend downwards for hundred of meters
What is discontinuous permafrost ?
It’s located at a latitude of 65 degrees north, just outside the northern hemisphere, this means temperatures are lower at only 6 degrees with an active layer of depth.
On a local scale what factors can effect the distribution of permafrost?
Proximity to water, slope orientation, characteristics of ground surface, vegetation cover, snow cover
What is frost heave ?
Frost heave causes the ground to expand and lift soil particles upwards. As the ground freezes, large stones become more chilled faster than the soil. The water below the stones freezes and expands pushing the stones upwards
