2.a Flashcards
What are longerons?
Main longitudinal member that carry bending loads
What are stringers?
Smaller and lighter than a longeron. They act as stiffeners and assist sheet to carry the loads
What are frames?
Vertical circular members
How is the frame and stringer attached together?
Clips/ cleats
What is a doubler?
A metal piece attach to the inner side of the skin to add extra strength
Where may doublers be found?
Cargo and passenger doors
What can doublers also be used for?
Crack stoppers placed 90 degrees to predicted path of crack propagation
What is a strut?
A member that can withstand compressive forces
What structural components are designed to carry tension forces?
Ties
Floor structures are attached to what?
Floor beams
The floor beams also carry what?
Tension forces of pressurisation and are considered part of the primary structure
What is done to floor beams in lav/ galley areas?
Sealed to stop corrsion
What are the span wise members of a wing?
Spars
What are the chord wise members of a wing?
Ribs
What direction do stringers run in the wing?
Spanwise
The box section allows the wing to have what?
Fuel tanks
What are the tree types of fuselage construction?
- Truss-type
- Monocoque
- Semi-monocoque
What is a truss type?
Frame work takes load
What takes the load on a monocoque fuselage?
The aircraft skin as it is thicker
What takes the load on a semi-monocoque structure?
Skin and supporting members
What is the advantage to a semi-monocoque structure?
Can withstand high damage without failure
How can the skin of the aircraft be attached?
Riveting or bonding
What should the skin be treated with to stop premature failure?
Anti-corrosion protection
How are wings fitted to the aircraft?
Connected to a centre wing box which is an integrated part of aircraft fuselage/ structure
How is the wing box supported?
Heavy frames and keel beams
What is the method of skin protection?
- Pre treat
- Primer
- Top coat
What direction do keel beams run?
Longitudinal
What areas don’t have paint protection?
- Leading edge wings and engine
- Pylon
- Scuff plates
- Equipment
