2.8 Responsible Design Flashcards
What is a sustainable product?
Sustainable products are those products that provide environmental, social and economic benefits while protecting public health and environment over their whole life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials until the final disposal.
What are the 7 different forms of renewable energy?
Wind Hydro Solar Wave Tidal Geothermal Biomass
What are the 6 R’s of sustainability?
Reduce Reuse Recycle Repair Refuse Rethink
What are some advantages of renewable energy?
Sustainable - will never run out Require less maintenance Lower costs "Clean energy" Social and economic benefits
What are some disadvantages of renewable energy?
Can be difficult to generate large amounts of energy
Often relies on weather for the source of power
Cannot be stored in large quantities
Currently more expensive due to capital cost associated with new technologies
Sustainability
being able to meet the needs of the current generation whilst also providing for the future.
Finite resources
resources that are being used faster than they are being naturally replaced.
solar power
harnessing energy from the sun to store electricity
hydroelectric power
using man made dams that turn turbines to generate electricity
biomass
burning organic matter to produce stream to drive turbines
non-finite materials
resources that are unlikely to be exhausted or those that are replaced faster than we can use them.
responsible design
a more holistic and responsible approach to product design that embraces ethical, cultural and humanitarian values
waste disposal methods
Recycling
Dumping at sea
Landfill
