27.8 Abrasive Water Jet Machining Flashcards
What is it?
Single layer or multilayer cutting of metallic and nonmetallic materials.
Based on the force that results from the momentum change of a stream of water WITH ABRASIVE PARTICLES
When u want to structure harder materials and the water pressure from the WJM is not sufficient enough.
How does it work?
In Abrasive Water-jet machining(AWJM), the water jet contains abrasive particles, such as silicon carbide or aluminium oxide, which greatly increases the material-removal rate.
Metallic, nonmetallic and advanced composite materials if various thicknesses, in single layers or multilayers can be cut.
Optimum level abrasives in the jet stream can in systems
Nozzles are typically made of rubies, sapphires and diamond
Other info adv, disadv crap
- particularly suitable for heat- sensitive materials that cannot be machined by processes in which heat is produced
- cutting speeds can be as high as 7.5m/min for reinforced plastics, but are much lower for metals, consequently process may not be economical for processes requiring high production rates
- Min hole diameter is 0.4mm, max is 25mm
- complex shapes can be manufactured economically
