2.7 Ions And Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is a Cation?
An ion with a positive charge.
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion.
Does the Atom lose protons, when an ionic compound is created?
No. The Adam either gains electrons or loses electrons only.
Which elements form ionic compounds?
In general metal Atoms tend to lose electrons to form cations and nonmetal atoms tend to gain electrons to form anions. Thus the ionic compounds tend to be composed of metals bonded with nonmetals.
How is the periodic table organized to show the predictable charges of common ions?
Column 1a, 2a, have ion charges equal there column number.
(skip transition metals)
Column 3a and 4a and 5a (except nitrogen) are metalloids. Metalloids often change their charge. They fluctuate.
Column 6a and 7a are one less than the noble gases in column 8a. Which are neutral. 7a is -1. 6a is -2. (Nitrogen in column 5a is -3)
What is an ion?
The nucleus of an atom is unchanged by can go processes, but some Atoms can readily gain or lose electrons. If electrons are removed or added to an Atom, a charged particle called an ion is formed.
