Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
First amendment
Protects the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms. Establishes a militia that is necessary for a free state.
Second amendment
Prohibits solders from quartering in private homes during peacetime without getting the permission of the owner.
Third amendment
Protects peoples right to privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
Forth amendment
No person tried without the grand jury indictment or punished twice for the same offence. Prohibits being a witness against yourself and guarantees “due process of law”
Fifth amendment
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair and speedy trial.
Sixth amendment
Guarantees a trial by jury.
Seventh amendment
Insures that punishments for crimes are not excessive, cruel, or unusual.
Eighth amendment
People retain rights not listed in the United Stated Constitution.
Ninth amendment
Power not given to the federal government is given to the people or states (very important for state government)
Tenth amendment
People cannot sue the state in federal courts
Eleventh amendment
President and vice president have separate ballets
Twelfth amendment
Abolished slavery
Thirteenth amendment
All people born, naturalized in the Untied States enjoy full rights
Fourteenth amendment
States can’t prevent a person from voting because of race, creed, or color
Fifteenth amendment
Establishes congress’s right to impose federal income taxes
Sixteenth amendment
Provides for popular election of united senators
Seventeenth amendment
Prohibition, no alcoholic beverages bough or sold
Eighteenth amendment
Ends woman suffrage. US women can vote in all elections.
Nineteenth amendment
Changed toe date president takes office from March 4 to January 20
Twentieth amendment
repealed prohibition and voided the 18 amendment
twenty-first amendment
No person should be elected into office more than 2 terms
Twenty-second amendment
Gave citizens of D.C. the right to vote in presidential elections
Twenty- third amendment
Forbids taxing voters before they vote in national elections
Twenty-forth amendment
Established the president may pass duty to the vise president and so on.
Twenty-fifth amendment
18 yr old are allowed to vote in federal and state elections
Twenty-sixth amendment
Prohibits congress from voting its self mid-term pay raises.
