Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
1st amendment trick- freedoms come FIRST
Protects the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms. Establishes a militia that is necessary for a free state.
2nd amendment trick- TO (two) bear arms
Prohibits soldiers from temporarily residing (quartering) in private homes during peacetime without getting the permission and consent of the owner.
3rd amendment trick- No housing of 3 soldiers
Protects people’s right to privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.
4th amendment FOR (four) a search
No person tried without a grand jury indictment or punished twice for the same offense. Prohibits being a witness against yourself and guarantees “due process of law”
5th amendment trick- can’t be punished 5 times for the same offense or the long one
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair and speedy trail.
6th amendment trick- rights of accused in criminal cases (6 words)
Guarantees a trial by jury.
7th amendment trick- TRIAL BY jury (7 letters)
Insures that punishments for crimes are not excessive, cruel, or unusual.
8th amendment trick- Eight Excessive (start with same letter)
People retain rights not listed in the United States Constitution.
9th amendment trick- peoples rights
Power not given to the federal government is given to the people or states (very important for state government)
10th amendment trick- states rights
Individual cannot sue a state in federal courts.
11th amendment trick- Individual can’t sue state ( the i and l in individual looks like 11)
Repeals part of Article 2, Section 1, of the Constitution.
12th amendment trick- art. (2) sec. (1)
Abolish slavery and involuntary servitude.
13th amendment trick- lucky 13 for those in slavery
All persons born or naturalized in the United States enjoy full rights.
14th amendment trick- FOUR THE rights of the people ( kinda sounds like 14)
Protects the rights of Americans to vote in elections
15th amendment trick- protects THE rights OF Americans. ( the 3 words + of 2 words = 5 or 15)
Establishes Congress’s right to impose a federal income tax.
16th amendment trick- 16yr olds will pay income TAX
Provides for popular election of United States senators.
17th amendment trick- PROVIDES FOR UNITED States ( provides 8 words + for 3 words + United 6 words = 17 words)
No alcoholic beverages to be bought or sold in the United States.
18th amendment trick- 18yr old alcohol is illegal
Woman suffrage. Some states had already given women the right to vote in some elections. This amendment provides all women, who are U.S citizens, the right to vote in all elections.
19th amendment trick- WOMAN SUFFRAGE in STATES. (19 words= 19th amendment)
Changed the date the president takes office from March 4th to January 20th.
20th amendment trick- Jan 20th<- president starts
Repealed prohibition and voided the 18th amendment.
21st amendment trick- 21yr olds alcohol legal
No person shall be elected to the office of president more than twice.
22nd amendment trick- Two Terms
Gave residents of Washington D.C., the right to vote in presidential elections.
23rd amendment trick- MJ-goes to Washington
Anti-poll tax amendment. Forbids taxing voters before they vote in national elections
24th amendment trick- ANTI-poll tax
Establishes the process by which an ailing president may pass the duties of the office to the vice president.
25th amendment trick- Establishes the pr ocess (2+5=25th)
18-year olds are allowed to vote in federal and state elections.
26th amendment trick- 18+18=36 (close to 26)
Prohibits Congress from voting itself mid-term pay raises.
27th amendment trick- end of amendments- pay raise at the end
