2.7 Alcohols & Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What are the methods of making alcohol?
- nucleophilic substitution of halogenoalkanes
- hydration of ethane ( steam, H3PO4 catalyst, 60atm, 300°C )
- fermentation of glucose with yeast catalyst
How do you classify an alcohol?
Count the number of atoms around the alpha carbon
What is the oxidising agent used in the oxidisation of alcohols?
Acidified potassium dichromate - H+/K2Cr2O7
Oxidisation of a primary alcohol
Alcohol —> aldehyde —> carboxylic acid
Oxidisation of secondary alcohol
Alcohol —> ketone
Oxidisation of a tertiary alcohol
No reaction
What are carboxylic acids?
Weak acids of a pH of 3 to 6
How do you test for carboxylic acids?
- add metal carbonate
- effervesce
How do you make an ester?
Alcohol + carboxylic acid —> ester
Primary alcohol
OH on carbon bonded to only one other carbon
Secondary alcohol
OH on a carbon that’s bonded to two other carbons
Tertiary alcohol
OH on a carbon bonded to 3 others
Reflux
Liquid evaporates and its vapour is condensed
Why is reflux necessary with ester formation?
Reaction is slow
What is used for the oxidation of alcohols?
Acidified potassium dichromate
