uses for the imperfect subjunctive
to give opinions, suggest, express doubt, etc. in the past
forming the imperfect
use the third person plural of the preterit, drop the -ron ending, add the following subjunctive endings:
ra, ras, ra, ramos, rais, ran
deciding which form to use
present subjunctive: que compre, que compres, etc.
present perf. subjunctive: que haya comprado, que hayas comprado, etc.
imperfect subjunctive: que comprara, que compraras, etc/
talking about a present or future suggestion, emotion, etc. regarding a present or future action or state
use the present or future in the independent clause and the present subjunctive in the dependent clause (ex. Te dice que traigas las esculturas.)
to express a present doubt, emotion, etc. about a past action or state
use the present in the independent clause and the present perfect subjunctive in the dependent clause (ex. Es probable que el artesano haya visto ese cuadro.)
to talk about a past suggestion, emotion, etc. regarding a past action or state
use the past in the independent clause and the imperfect subjunctive in the dependent clause (ex. Nosotros dudábamos que la pintura fuera auténtica.)
