2.6 Species Interactions and Community Ecology Flashcards
What is competition?
When multiple organisms rely on the same limited resource.
What is the difference between INTRAspecific competition and INTERspecific competition?
INTRAspecific - Amongst the same species.
INTERspecific - Between different species.
Define exploitation
When one member benefits and the other is harmed.
Define predation
Predator hunts and kills prey.
Define parasitism
Parasites depend on host.
Define symbiosis
Organisms living in close proximity for a long-term relationship.
Define mutualism
Symbiotic interaction with both members benefit.
Define commensalism
Symbiotic interaction where one member benefits and the other is not impacted.
What is trophic cascade?
Ecological phenomenon that is triggered by removal/addition of a predator resulting in change at lower tropic levels.
What are Ecosystem engineers?
Organisms that physically modify the environment.
Define disturbance within a community
Event that has a dramatic impact on the environment.
Community Response to Disturbance
What is the difference between a RESISTANT community and a RESILIENT community?
Whereas a resistant community remains stable through a disturbance, a resilient community will be impacted but be able to rebound back.
Define Succession
Predictable change in a community either after a disturbance or just overtime.
