What is Legacy waste ?
These are the wastes that have been collected and kept for years at some barren land or place dedicated for landfill (An area to dump solid waste)
What are the disadvantages of it ?
1) Occupies large space
2) Breeding ground for pathogens, flies etc
3) Generation of leachate – leading to water contamination
4) Generation of GHG’s
5) Pose risk of uncontrollable fire
What is leachate ?
It is usually the name for liquids that leaches from garbage or waste in general
Which method has been proposed by CPCB for effective disposal of legacy wastes ?
Biomining/ Bioremediation method
What is Biomining ?
It is the technique of extracting and segregating minerals from mounds of waste. Examples are plastic, rubber, metals and glass along with other organic compounds
Recent context ?
NGT directed a committee to assess the amount of damage caused to the environment due to dump sites in Delhi
What does this committee consist of ?
Representatives of CPCB, NEERI and IIT Delhi
