2.6 Embedded and Specialized Systems Flashcards
Hardware and software designed for a specific function.
Embedded system
This small form-factor system involves mutliple components running on the same chip. Common with embedded systems.
System on a chip (SoC)
An integrated circuit that can be configured after manufacturing. Common in infrastructure, firewalls, and routers.
Field-programmable gate array (FPGA)
Large-scale systems often used in power generation, refining, manufacturing equipment, etc. Equipment is managed autonomously via computers.
Supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA)
What do all of the following devices have in common?
- Video Doorbell
- Your car’s entertainment system
- An enterprise HVAC system
- Drone
- Printer
They are all embedded systems
What speeds will 5G eventually be rated up to?
10 gbps
What kind of information does a SIM card contain that could pose a security risk of compromized?
Authentication and contact information
Why do embedded systems pose a unique security concern?
They are not full computers
Limited features and upgradability
Embedded system constraint:
Implied Trust
Security posture is difficult to verify
Embedded system constraint:
Authentication
Security often the afterthought
No MFA or directory services
Embedded system constraint:
Cryptography
Limited hardware options, hard to modify crypto features
Embedded system constraint:
Network
Wireless may be only option
Embedded system constraint:
Compute
Low power CPUs
Limited in speed, cost, and heat
Embedded system constraint:
Power
Batteries may need to replaced and maintained
