255 Textbook For Midterm Flashcards
Electric current
Is the time rate of change of charge measured in amperes A
Direct current
Flows only in one direction and can be constant or time varying
Alternating current
Is a current that changes direction with respect to time
Voltage (potential difference)
Is the energy required to move a unit charge from a reference point (-) to another point measured in volts
Power
Is the time rate of expending or absorbing energy measured in watts (W)
Passive sign convention
Satisfied when the current enters through the positive terminal of an element and p= +vi. If the current enters through the negative terminal p = -vi
Energy
The capacity to do work measured in joules (J)
Ideal independent source
An active element that provides a specified voltage or current that is completely independent if other circuits elements
Ideal dependent source
Is an active element in which the source quantity is controlled by another voltage or current
Resistance R
Of an element denotes its ability to resist the flow of electric current measured in ohms
Short Circuit
A circuit element with resistance approaching 0
Open circuit
Is a circuit element with resistance approaching infinity
Conductance
The ability to conduct electric current measures in siemens S or inverse of ohms
Short circuit
Is a circuit element with resistance approaching zero
Open circuit
Is a circuit element with resistance approaching infinity
Branch
Represents a single element such as a voltage source or a resistor
Node
Is the point of connection between two or more branches
Loop
Closed path in a circuit
Series
If they exclusively share a single node and consequently carry the same current
Parellel
If two or more elements are connected to the same two nodes and consequently have the same voltage across them
Kirchoffs current law
States that the algebraic sum of currents entering a node is 0
Kirchoffs voltage law
The algebraic sum of all voltages around a closed path is zero.
