25 Words for 8th Grade Flashcards
Arithmetic Sequence
A sequence which has a constant difference between terms.
Box plot
A diagram that shows the five number summary of a distribution.
Constant rate of change
The slope of a graph of an equation.
Constant term
A term whose value does not change.
Corresponding side
The relative position of two sides is the same on two figures.
Domain
The set of “input” values for which a function is defined.
Elimination
Adding or subtracting a system of equations to eliminate a variable.
Function
A relation that assigns exactly one value in the range to each value in the domain.
Function notation
To write an equation with f(x) in place of y.
Geometric sequence
A sequence which has a constant ratio between terms.
Histogram
A bar graph in which the labels for the bars are numerical intervals.
Interquartile range
The difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile.
Intersection
A point where two or more functions cross.
Linear equation
An algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product of a constant and (the first power of) a single variable.
Parallel lines
Lines that have the same slope.
Perpendicular lines
Lines where the product of their slopes is -1
Pythagorean Theorem
In any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs (a and b) is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse (c).
Range
The set of “output” values for which a function is defined.
Rate of change
The ratio of the change in the output and the change in the input values of a function.
Scatter plot
A graphic tool used to display the relationship between two quantitative (numerical) variables.
Slope
Describes steepness, incline, or grade of a line.
solution
Any and all value(s) of the variable(s) which; satisfies an equation, or inequality.
System of equations
two or more equations with the same variables, graphed on the same coordinate plane
Term
A mathematical expression which may form a separable part of an equation, a series , or another expression.
