Legislation
A set of rules that governs the way society operates. Another term for ‘laws’
The National Living Wage
An hourly rate of pay which is set by the government. All employees above a certain age must recieve this rate of pay
Discrimination
Treating one person differently from another without having good reasons to do so
Part-time employee
Works for a proportion of the working week - for example, three days each week, rather than five
Trade Union
A group of workers who act together to improve their pay and working conditions by holding the company hostage and, for example, going on mass strike, as seen in 70s-80s Britain
A contract of employment
A legal document stating the hours, rate of pay, duties, and other conidtions under which anperson is employed
Motivation
Refers to the range of factors which influence the way a person behaves at work
Consumer Laws
Laws that have been introduced to prevent business from treating their customer unfairly

- pregnancy or maternity
- sexual orientatiom
Employment law for pregnant employees
All pregnant employees are entitle to take 52 weeks leave around the birth of their child. Employers have to pay a minimum level of pay to the worker during this period, but can reclaim most of it from the government. The job has to be kept open for the employee to return to it if she wishes
Holiday Employment Law
All employees have a legal right to a paid holiday. Any employee in the UK has the right to a 5.6 weeks paus holiday each year
Working hours employment law
For employees above the age of 18, there is a limit of 48 hours that an employeer can ask you to work, but you are allowed to work longer hours if you wish
Employment Law on trade unions
Every employee has the right to join a union, and the business does not have the right to limit the employees ability to join a trade union
Leave employment law
Every member of staff has the legal right to have seveal reasons to be able to take leave, such as if a dependent (usually a child) is ill
The Health and Safety at Work act 1974
- Installation and maintenance of safety equipment and clothing
- Maintenance of workplace temperatures
- Giving employees sufficient breaks during the working day
- Providing protection against dangerous substances
- Fitting guards in dangerous machinery
- Writing and displaying a safety policy
