2.5-2.6 Derivative Rules: power Flashcards

1
Q

In words, how do you find the derivative of a power? (x^n)

A

Bring the power down and subtract one from it. If there are any other numbers out front multiply the power when you bring it down. Be careful about parentheses.

Technically think of sqrt as x^1/2 and use the power rule to get (1/2)x^-(1/2). the negative exponent moves it down to the bottom giving you 1 over 2 times root x on bottom.
