24.4 conservation and preservation Flashcards
define conservation
maintenance of biodiversity through human action or management
what is sustainable development
involves management of ecosystems so that natural resources in them can be used without running out
what is reclamation
process of restoring ecosystems that have been damaged/destroyed (e.g. controlled burning of forest areas which halt succession and increase biodiversity)
economic importance of conservation
- provide resources for humans to survive and reproduce
- e.g. medicinal drugs, clothes, food, timber and paper
social importance of conservation
- natural beauty of wild ecosystems is enjoyable
- used for relaxation/ exercise so has health benefits
- e.g. bird watching, walking, cycling and climbing
ethical importance of conservation
- we don’t have rights to decide which organisms survive and which don’t
- moral responsibility to conserve natural ecosystems for future generations
define preservation
protection of an area by restricting or banning human interference so that the ecosystem is kept in its original state. NO VISITATION
what type of resources is preservation used for
ecologically, archaeologically or paleontologically sensitive resources which are damaged/destroyed easily by disturbances
what is commonly preserved and what is commonly conserved
objects and buildings = preservation
natural environments = conservation
