Tuskegee Airmen
Highly decorated pilot squadron most famous of African American units
- completed more than 1,500 missions, escoritng heavy bombers into Germany, and earned several hundred merits and medals
Double V campaign
Led by Pittsburg Courier to connect fight abroad and fight at home (African Americans seeing fight aganist facism and fight for racial equality linked)
Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
Founded in 1942 and spearheaded the method of nonviolent direct action to achieve degregation
Alien Enemy Act
A piece of the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts passed in 1789, allowing government to investigate and indefinitely detain ppl in wartime
- used bc FBI was suspicious of disloyalty for detainment, heartings, and possible internment
Executive Order 9066
Escalated Alien Enemy Act, creating a full system of internment with an “exclusion zone” on West Coast and concentration camps spreading across country
Result: creation of a system of internment of people “suspected of disloyalty”
Internment
German-Americans and Italian-Americans interned under this system but Japanese-Americans and Japanese residents was the largest group that were impacted, lost property and jobs
- ppl suspected of disloyalty
- imprisonment of ppl without charges or intent to file charges
St. Louis
German ship carrying 900 Jewish refugees traveling to Cuba and Flordia seeking asylum, passengers murdered in Holocaust
- passengers could not recieve visas under U.S. quota system, told passengers taht they all must wait for turns on the waiting list and qualify for immigration visas before they may be admissible into US
United Nations
created a hybrid of a League of Nations-style assembly of member nations and FDR’s concept of “five policement”
- 4 policemen + france, consulting how to best keep the peace and when to deploy the military power of assembled nations to protect freedom of speech, worship, wants
Germany was not included as a permannt member of the security council
Security Council
“Five Policement” of US, USSR, China, France, and UK that would consult how to best to keep peace and when to deply military pwoer of assembled nations
Gi Bill
Provided a system of unemploment benefits, free education including stipends, and measures to assist in buying homes but excluded many creating a postwar economic boom
- Us made this to smooth the re-entry of veterans into economy and compensation for ending of wartime spending
- Outlawing racial discrimination in mortgage lending was NOT a component of this
