2.4 Theories of Schz Flashcards
What are the three biolgical theories for schz?
Adoptive studies, Dopamine hypothesis and Neurological
What does Heston (1966) show us?
Children of mothers with Schz more prone to psychopathy and neuroticism
What is the dopamine hypothesis?
- Schz involves excessive dopamine activity
What study showed support for Dopamine hypothesis?
Randrup and Munkuad (1966)
- L dopa study
- rats showed signs of schz
- then gave anti-psychotics and the symptoms lessened
What does neurological theory say?
Enlarged ventricles, means brain tissue is less, common in schz
What are three psychological theories?
Stress-vulnerability model, Gene-enviroment interaction model, Expressed emotion
What is the stress-vulnerability model?
People with schz more vulnerable to stress
What is the Horan et al (2006) study?
- reponses to 1994 CA earthquake
- Avoidance highest in people with schz
- coping lowest in people with schz
What is the gene-environment interaction model?
- dysfunctional adoptive families positivley correlated with likelihood of developing disorders
- risk more prominent for high risk (biologically)
What is expressed emotion? how does it effect schz patients?
- emotions and attributes expressed by relatives towards a family member with schz
- string predictor of relapse
What did brown (1972) study show?
patients who lived with high EE relatives had signs of higher relapase rate 9 months after discharge than patients with low EE
What is Bipolar Disorder (BPD)
High and low moods which both can be disabling
Facts about BPD
- 1% of pop have it
- average onset early 20s
- equal prevelnace in both genders
-Females get more depression less mania
