2.4 - Rate of reaction change Flashcards
3 ways to measure gases in reactions
- Use a gas syringe
- Measure the mass of reaction before and after
- Upturned measuring cylinder filled with water
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a reaction and is not used up
How can a rate of a reaction be increased? (5)
- increasing the solutions concentration
- raising pressure of a gas
- increasing the surface area of a solid
- increasing the temperature
- adding a catalyst
What is the activation energy?
The minimum energy required for a reaction to occur
What is a risk of HCL?
It is an irritant so could splash in someones eyes but can be prevented by wearing safety goggles
What is a risk of sulphur dioxide?
The gas could be breathed in and cause coughing or an asthma attack but can be reduced by wearing a mask or use a fume cupboard
How is the activation energy lowered?
By a catalyst, there are more collisions every second so the reaction happens faster
What is the importance of developing new catalysts?
To increase yields
- preserve raw materials
- reduce energy costs
What is the collision theory
When the temperature is higher the particles have more energy so they collide more frequently, and the collisions have more energy so there are more successful collisions
Surface area
More chance for the particles to collide successfully if the surface area is large
