2.4 motivation and demotivation Flashcards
Motivation
Describes the factors that arise, maintainand channel behaviour towards a goal
Intrinsic motivation
Occurs when people engage in an activity out of their own desire
Extrinsic motivation
Occurs when people engage in an activity because of the benefits and rewards associated with the activity
Absenteeism
Absent from work without a good reason
Three motivation theories
Taylor (scientific management)
Maslow (hierarchy of needs)
Herzberg (motivation - hygiene theory)
4 steps of taylorism
- study the work process to determine the most efficient production methods
- observe and time the best workers in these methods
- train the remaining workers to the same standard
- implement differential pay rates and close supervision to increase productivity
who was taylor and what did he believe
engineer, 1856 to 1917; people workers for only one reason, money + managers role was to maximise efficiency + motivation was either incentive or threat + it was all about control
maslows hierarchy of needs
biological and physiological needs → security needs → social needs → esteem needs → self-actualization
