2.4 Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What is an inorganic ion and some examples?
An inorganic ion is one which doesn’t contain carbon. Each ion has a specific role, depending on its properties. Its rule determines whether it is found in high or low concentrations.
What is the role of hydrogen ions?
Determines the pH
~ the pH is calculated based on the concentration of H+ ions in the environment the more H plus ions present the lower, the pH ( and more acidic)
What is the role of sodium ions?
They help transport glucose and amino acid across membranes
A molecule of glucose or an amino acid can be transported into a cell alongside an Na+ ion
What is the role of phosphate ions?
~ they are an essential component of ATP and DNA
~Bonds between phosphate groups, store energy, in ATP
~ phosphate groups in DNA and RNA allows nucleotides to join to form polynucleotides
