2.4 Humanist, Cognitive, Evolutionary Flashcards
Epigentics
Chemical tags on DNA that have ability to turn genes on and off.
Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance
Passing epigenetic marks through generations.
Neocortex
Part of the brain responsible for handling sight, hearing, conscious decision-making and language.
Methylation
Attaching small molecules called methyl groups (one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms) to DNA nucleotides or the amino acids that make up histone proteins.
Euchromatic
Open chromosomal region. Allows for access of RNA polymerase & other proteins to bind to the promoter region.
Heterochromatin
Configuration that doesn’t allow RNA polymerase/proteins to transcript. (Turns off transcription).
Acetylation
Histone tails can be modified by addition of acetyl group. (2 carbon molecules)
Genotype vs Phenotype
Genotype is set of genes an organism carries. Phenotype is set of observable characteristics (which are influenced by genotype and environment. (Ie flamingos eat food that makes them pink but their genotype is white.)
