2.4 Filtration Flashcards
What is filtration?
Filtration is the process of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid using a filter.
What is the residue?
Residue is the insoluble solid that remains on the filter paper after filtration.
What is the filtrate?
Filtrate is the liquid that passes through the filter paper during filtration.
What kind of mixture can be separated by filtration?
A mixture of an insoluble solid and a liquid (e.g., sand and water).
Why can the filtrate pass through the filter paper?
Because its particles are small enough to fit through the tiny holes in the paper.
Why can’t the residue pass through the filter paper?
Because its particles are too large to fit through the holes in the filter.
