2.4: Disease Control Flashcards
1
Q
Main methods of disease control
A
- Control/kill vectors that cause spread
- Kill pathogens
- Quarantine
2
Q
Method of Controlling/Killing Vectors
A
- Animals classified as vectors include: flies, mosquitos, fleas, foxes, dogs
- Methods of controlling vectors: sanitation, barriers and traps, insecticides, biological methods
3
Q
Method of killing pathogens
A
- Antibiotics: chemicals tat work by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria, typically by interrupting a process the bacteria needs to carry out to survive
- Antiseptics: chemicals that kill microbes on the outside of the body
- Disinfectants: chemicals, similar to antiseptics but used to kill microbes on floors, surfaces etc.
4
Q
Quarantine
A
- Aims to keep those infected by disease, separated from healthy members of the population to prevent the spread
5
Q
Antibiotic resistance
A
Bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant. These bacteria may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria.
Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality.
Only use antibiotics when prescribed by a certified health professional.
