Q

Method of killing pathogens

A
  • Antibiotics: chemicals tat work by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria, typically by interrupting a process the bacteria needs to carry out to survive
  • Antiseptics: chemicals that kill microbes on the outside of the body
  • Disinfectants: chemicals, similar to antiseptics but used to kill microbes on floors, surfaces etc.

Q

Antibiotic resistance

A

Bacteria, not humans or animals, become antibiotic-resistant. These bacteria may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by non-resistant bacteria.

Antibiotic resistance leads to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality.

Only use antibiotics when prescribed by a certified health professional.
