What are the 8 main principles of the Data Protection Act?
Data must be:
- Fairly and lawfully processed
- Processed for limited purposes
- Adequate, relevant, and not excessive
- Accurate
- Not kept for longer than necessary
- Processed in accordance with the data subject’s rights
- Secure
- Not transferred to countries without adequate data protection
Data subjects also have subject access rights which mean a data subject has the right to know what information an organisation stores about them, and to correct this if it is incorrect
What is the Freedom of Information Act?
The Freedom of Information Act extends the subject access rights of the Data Protection act, giving individuals access to personal and non-personal data held by public authorities
