bargaining and pursausion
an informal tool used by the president to persuade members of Congress to support his or her policy initiatives.
commander in chief
THe president acts as commander in chief of the army and has power to deploy troops
formal powers
Powers exclusivly stated in article 2 of the constitution

an international agreement made without the approval of Congress
executive order
empowers the president to carry out a low or to administer the government
executive privilege
the privilege, claimed by the president for the executive branch of the US government, of withholding information in the public interest.
informal powers
Powers not listed in the constitution but still exercised by the potus
line pocket veto
Presidential power to strike, or remove, specific items from a spending bill without vetoing the entire bill. The president does not have this power any more.
pocket veto
occurs when the POTUS receives a bill within the last 10 days of a Congressional session and does nothing allowing the bill to die.
policy agenda
THE agenda of the POTUS at the beginning of his presidency about what laws and ideals he will enact
signing statements
statement issued by a president upon the signing of a bill into law by which the president indicates his or her interpretation of the law.
vetos
The presidential power to stop a bill or piece of legislature being passed.
ambassador
responsible for representing the United States in foreign nations
cabinet
the group of principle officers in each executive department and any other people the POTUS adds
chief of staff
The Chief of Staff is one of the most influential members of the White House Staff, managing access to the President and coordinating activities within the staff.
joint chiefs of staff
includes the army, navy, air force and marines.
inherent powers
allow the president to act in situations where the Constitution may not provide explicit guidance
Federalist no.70
Federalist No. 70 argues in favor of the unitary executive created by Article II of the United States Constitution. According to Hamilton, a unitary executive is necessary to: ensure accountability in government.
imperial presidency
when the POTUS has greater powers than the constitution allows

the POTUS has the duty to take care of the American people and act in national interest, unless the action was clearly prohibited by the constitution
