2.4 Flashcards
Population Dynamics
Fertility
Determines a population’s growth and decline:
1. Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
2. Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
Mortality
Determines a population’s growth and decline:
1. Life Expectancy
2. Crude Death Rate (CDR)
3. Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
Migration
Determines a population’s growth and decline:
1. Immigration
2. Emigration
Fertility: Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
The number of live births occurring in one year per 1,000 people
Fertility: Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
Average number of children who would be born per woman during her childbearing years.
Mortality: Life Expectancy
The number of years the average person will live.
Mortality: Crude Death Rate (CDR)
The number of deaths occurring in one year per 1,000 people.
Mortality: Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
The number of children who die before one year of age.
Natural Increase Rate (NIR)
CBR-CDR divided by 10
1. Does not account for migration
2. Can be a negative number, indicating population decrease
2. Usually expressed as a percentage
Doubling Time
The number of years in which a population will double
assuming the growth rate remains stable.
