2.3.8 Translation Flashcards
1
Q
What is translation
A
- Cytoplasm
- After leaving nucleus via nuclear pores, mRNA strand attaches to a ribosome
- In cytoplasm there are free molecules of tRNA
- tRNA contains a triplet of unpaired bases called the anticodon at one end, and a region where specific amino acids can attach to at the other
- tRNA binds with specific amino acids
- Brings them to mRNA molecule on ribosome
- Anticodons on tRNA molecules pair with complementary codon on mRNA molecule
- 2 tRNA molecules fit onto the ribosome at a time, and a peptide bond is formed via a condensation reaction between the 2 amino acids, joining them
- Process continues until a stop codon on mRNA is reached, and translation stops
- Amino acid chain is complete, and final polypeptide is formed
