2.3 Wider impact of chemistry Flashcards
what are the social, economical and environmental effects of factory/industry placement on a local area?
social - noise pollution, disturbance, more jobs so more money income
economic - more jobs so more money income, negative impact on tourism
environmental - noise, air, water pollution, more traffic
what is the aim of green chemistry?
to make chemicals and products that we need with as little impact on health and environment as possible
what is sustainable development?
meets the needs of the present without negatively impacting the needs of the future
what are some ways to complete green chemistry?
- using as little E as possible ad from renewable sources and gen increase E efficiency
- use methods w/high atom economy and therefore little waste
- avoid using solvents, particularly volatile solvents
- make biodegradable product
what do VOCs stand for
volatile organic compounds
how do chemicals, such as CO2, SO2, VOCs effect the environment?
climate change, air pollution, water pollution, greenhouse gases
what is an alternative to mined metals? why
recycling scrap materials is more sustainable as uses less energy
how do catalysts impact sustainability?
speeds up rxn by lowering Ea, resulting in higher yield
what does a high atom economy percentage mean?
if no. high, process is sustainable as less waste of atoms
is it possible to have high %yield but low atom economy?
yes as %yield only takes into account 1 reactant and 1 product
what does ⇋ mean in terms of sustainability?
high sustainability as rxn can be reversed
