2.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What happens with electrons during polar covalent bonds
They are shared unequally
What happens with electrons during non polar covalent bonds
They are shared equally
What happens with electrons during ionic bonds
They transfer electrons from a nonmetal to a metal
What is the difference between Ionic and Covalent bonds
Ionic is between a metal and nonmetal and Covalent is between 2 nonmetals
What is the difference between non polar and polar bonds
Non polar bonds the electrons are shared equally and both the ends are the same. Polar bonds the electrons are shared unequally and the ends are opposites.
Define electronegativity
the tendency for an atom of a given chemical element to attract shared electrons when forming a chemical bond
how does electronegativity determine what type of bond two atoms will form
The atom with the higher electronegativity will attract the shared electrons more strongly.
How do ionic compounds react in water
All the molecules split apart and bounce around
How do covalent compounds react in water (i.e sugar)
The molecules stay together and bounce around
What compound had the highest electronegativity
