2.3 Memory and Reality Flashcards
cryptomnesia
attribute idea to internal source when it was actually external
- high confidence
false fame effect
misattributing familiarity to fame
- only in delayed condition, only after one presentation
- when source info degrades, familiarity is used
sleeper effects
persuasion through discounting
- after delay, low credibility info recovers to level of credible source
- credibility loses influence as source info degrades
post-event misinformation
memory altered by post-event misinformation
- effect increases over time
- not due to demand characteristics (offered money for accuracy didn’t change result)
- susceptibility to misinformation influenced by expectations
implanted memories
false memories implanted from an external source
- must be plausible
- imagination inflation: when they actively imagine false events it increases the likelihood of false memories
- experiencing some aspect of the event (hearing car accident, remember seeing it)
- adopting first person perspective
- repeated imaginings
- viewing photos from time period of alleged event
