23 - Lipids and Membranes I Flashcards
What is the structure of the membrane?
Lipid bilayer with embedded proteins
What is an integral protein?
A protein that contacts the hydrophobic core
What is a peripheral protein?
A protein that does not contact the hydrophobic core
What are the two sides of a membrane?
Cytofacial (faces cytoplasm) and exofacial (faces ECM)
In a vacuole, which is exofacial and which is cytofacial?
Cytofacial is “outside” and exofacial is “inside”
What is the general structure of a phospholipid?
A polar head with two hydrophobic tails
What is a lipid?
A modified oil
What is the fluid mosaic model?
Protein are floating in a liquid bilayer (2D liquid)
Where are carbohydrates found?
Only on the exofacial surface
What are some functions (6) of the membrane?
- Transport
- Hormonal signaling (often kinase phosphorylation)
- Cell-cell interaction
- Maintenance functions (make membrane protein sin rough ER, modification/sorting in golgi, endocytosis regulation/recycling)
- Invasion (bacteria/viruses)
- Cytoskeleton connections (shape)
What is a lipid raft?
A specialized protein/lipid function
How much of the genome is dedicated to membrane proteins?
30%
How many drugs act on membrane proteins?
50%
