2.2.6 Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is a covalent bond?
A
The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms.
2
Q
How does a covalent bond work?
A
The negatively charged shared pair of electrons is attracted to the positive charges of both nuclei. This attraction overcomes the repulsion between the two positively charged nuclei.
3
Q
What is a lone pair?
A
An non-bonding pair of electrons.
4
Q
What does a lone pair result in?
A
A concentrated region of negative charge around the atom.
5
Q
What do we call the measure of the average energy of a bond?
A
Average bond enthalpy.
