2.2.2 E.M.F. and P.D. Flashcards
Define Terminal P.D.
PD measured across terminals of a cell or battery. Equal to the EMF if no current is being drawn.
Define the Volt.
PD between 2 points in a circuit in which 1 joule of electrical energy is transferred to other forms when 1C charge flows between them. 1JC^-1
Define E.M.F.
Potential energy gained by a unit charge passing through a cell or battery. Equal to voltage across it when not current is being drawn.
State Kirchhoff’s 2nd Law.
In any given loop in a circuit the sum of the EMFs is equal to the sum of the PDs as a consequence of the conservation of energy law.
Define Potential Difference.
Amount of electrical energy transferred to other energy forms per coulomb of charge flowing between them.
