2.2.1 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is a producer?
An organism that can make its own food e.g. plants and algae
Give 2 examples of producers.
Plants
Algae
By which process do plants produce their own food?
Photosynthesis
How are algae different to plants?
- The can be unicellular or multicellular
- They live underwater
- Algae do not have stems, roots or leaves.
How are plants different to algae?
- They are all multicellular
- They live mostly on land
- They have stems, roots and leaves
What is a consumer?
Organisms that have to eat other organisms to survive e.g. animals are consumers
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight –> glucose + oxygen
Name the reactants of photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide + water
Name the products of photosynthesis.
glucose + oxygen
Where does photosynthesis take place inside plant or algal cells?
Within the chloroplasts
What is the name of the green pigment found inside chloroplasts?
Chlorophyll
What does chlorophyll do?
Captures light energy inside the chloroplasts
Describe the journey of water through a plant.
- Water enters through the root hair cells of the roots.
- Water travels through tubes called xylem tubes.
- Water evapourates out of the leaves.
How do gases enter and exit a plant?
Through tiny holes in the underside of leaves called stomata.
Which gas enters leaves?
Carbon dioxide
