22.09.2023 homeostasis L1 Flashcards
homeostasis
everything staying normal, in durations small compared to a human life
our job as physicians
is to maintain homeostasis in patients, and help them get as close to normal as possible if there is a departure
2 homeostasis categories
- avoiding change caused by interal processes inherent in body
- avoiding change by environmental factors
common diseases due to homeostasis failure
- infection
- diabetes melitus
- hypertension
- cancer
- alzheimer’s disease
what is second law of thermodynamics
organised things become disorganised over time
what does second law mean for the human body
it has to expend energy just to maintain its organisation
reactions that go uphill are linked with
reactions that go downhill
if oxidising sugar causes fire, why are we not on fire?
as glucose in processed in a series of small steps, allowing the recovery of small amounts of energy
typical energy change in metabolic reactions
0.2eV
metabolic reactions driven by
0.3eV from ATP
oxidising glucose releases
29eV
why is metabolism complicated
because it has to be in small steps which make lots of ATP molecules out of high energy molecules in food
