2202 PRELIMS Flashcards
-The upkeep of equipment to be sure it performs as it was designed and built to perform.
-When a component begins to fail, correct maintenance will usually prevent the problem becoming major.
Maintenance
to restore a type-certificated product to “condition for safe operation.”
REPAIR
adds to and/or removes from the type-certificated product’s configuration.
ALTERATION
A repair that cannot be done by elementary operations which greatly affects the weight, balance, structural strength, aircraft performance, power plant operations, flight characteristics and other qualities affecting airworthiness
MAJOR REPAIR
Means the renewal or replacement of any existing part or parts of a building or structure, in keeping with its existing type.
A repair other than major repair
MINOR REPAIR
-an alteration not listed in the aircraft, engine or propeller specifications.
-It cannot be done by elementary operations that greatly affect the weight, balance, structural strength, aircraft performance, power plant operations, flight characteristics and other qualities affecting airworthiness.
MAJOR ALTERATION
having no appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength, powerplant operations, flight characteristics or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness of any aircraft.
an alteration other than major alteration.
MINOR ALTERATION
include modifications to the listed aircraft parts, or the listed types of modifications (when not included in the applicable aircraft specifications)
See PCAR Part 5 AIRWORTHINESS: IS: 5.1.1.2 (A) (1)
AIRFRAME MAJOR ALTERATION
Repairs to the following parts of an airframe and repairs of the following types, involving the strengthening, reinforcing, splicing, and manufacturing of primary structural members of their replacement, when replacement is by fabrication such as riveting or welding, are airframe major repairs.
See PCAR Part 5 AIRWORTHINESS: IS: 5.1.1.2(A)(3)
AIRFRAME MAJOR REPAIR
Repairs of the following parts of an engine and repairs of the following types, are power-plant major repairs.
See PCAR Part 5 AIRWORTHINESS: IS: 5.1.1.2(B)(3)
POWERPLANT MAJOR REPAIR
Major power-plant modifications, even when not listed in the applicable engine specifications.
See PCAR Part 5 AIRWORTHINESS: IS: 5.1.1.2 (A) (1)(b)
POWERPLANT MAJOR ALTERATION/MODIFICATION
a maintenance procedure followed to keep a part or component working properly or minor preservation and replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly operations.
(1) Removal, installation and repair of landing gear tires.
(2) Replacing elastic shock absorber cords on landing gear.
(3) Servicing landing gear shock struts by adding oil, air, or both.
(4) Servicing landing gear wheel bearings, such as cleaning and greasing.
(5) Replacing defective safety wiring or cotter keys.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
contains descriptive information and detailed step by step instructions covering work performed on a unit or component away from the aircraft.
It usually contains instructions for disassembly, cleaning, inspection, repair or replacement of parts, tolerances, reassembly & testing
OVERHAUL MANUAL
provided by the manufacturer
contains complete instructions covering maintenance of aircraft systems, its components and parts installed in the aircraft.
AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
contains component or parts breakdowns with part numbers in disassembly sequence.
identifies the part number and location of items installed in the aircraft, power plant propeller and accessories.
