2.2 WHAT ARE ROCKS AND HOW ARE THEY A NATURAL RESOURCE? Flashcards
1
Q
What are rocks?
A
Natural material made up of mineral grains
2
Q
Igneous rocks
A
Formed from molten rocks
E.g. Basalt, granite
3
Q
Sedimentary rocks
A
Formed under the sea
E.g. Chalk, limestone, sandstone, coal
4
Q
Metamorphic rocks
A
Formed when igneous and sedimentary rocks are exposed to high temperature and pressures
E.g. Marble, slate
5
Q
What is weathering?
A
Air, water, changing temperatures, plants and animals all attack rocks causing them to break down and rot away
6
Q
Freeze-thaw weathering
A
- Water gets into a crack in a rock and freezes
- As the water turns into ice - expands and causes the crack to widen
- Repeated process - rock eventually splits into pieces
7
Q
Chemical weathering
A
- Rainwater (slightly acidic) comes into contact with rock
- Acid attacks the rock, causing it to rot and crumble
8
Q
Biological weathering
A
- Plants and animals break down rock
- Roots of plants and trees can get into cracks in rocks, causing them to split
- Burrowing animals and worms can also weaken rocks
