2.2 Vocab Review Flashcards
What determines the number of possible real zeros?
The number of degrees (the highest exponent in the polynomial)
What determines the number of turning points?
The number of degrees minus one
What is the number of degrees?
The highest exponent in the polynomial
What are the highest and lowest points of the polynomial called?
The maxima and minima
What are the zeros?
The solutions
When does the sign change?
In the zeros/ solution
What are the factors of the function X2+6x+5?
(X+5) (X+1)
What do the factors of the function X2+6x+5 look like written as an ordered pair?
(-5,0) (-1,0)
What is multiplicity?
The number of times a number is a possible solution
Write an example in factored form of a polynomial with the roots of X=-4, mult. of 3
y= (x+4)3
If the number of degrees is odd, what does the graph do?
It crosses the x-axis
If the number of degrees is even, what does the graph do?
It touches the x-axis
How do you describe the graph of a polynomial?
Factor the polynomial and find the degree and the lead coefficient to determine the end behavior. Then plot the real zeros, state their multiplicity, and decide if the graph is touching or crossing at each zero.
