2.2 - The Phosphorus Cycle Flashcards
Where is phosphorus stored?
It is trapped in phosphate that makes up phosphate rock and sediment on the ocean floor.
What is weathering?
The process of breaking down rock into smaller fragments
What are the two different weathering processes?
Chemical weathering and physical weathering.
What is chemical weathering?
When a chemical reaction causes phosphate rocks to break down and release phosphate into the soil.
What can cause chemical weathering?
Acid precipitation and chemicals released by lichens
What is physical weathering?
When processes like wind, rain and freezing release particles of rock and phosphate into the soil.
How does phosphate enter aquatic ecosystems?
By erosion, leaching and run-off.
What is geological uplift?
The process of mountain building, where earth’s crust folds and deeply buried rocks layers rise and are exposed.
What is mined phosphate rock used for?
To make commercial fertilizers and detergents (laundry and dishwasher).
What happens if there is too much phosphorus in an ecosystem?
Eutrophication, algae blooms, fish death, etc.
What are some human activities that effect the phosphorus cycle?
The clearing of forests (using the slash and burn method), and phosphate leaches
Why is phosphorus essential to all living things?
It is needed for plants and animals to survive. Ex. Plants need it for roots, seed production, etc, and humans need it for their bone tissues.
