2.2 Quantum Numbers Flashcards
Explain emission spectra of elements. What do they provide? When is that?
Emission spectra of elements with more than one atom provide evidence of sub-levels within each principal energy level above the first.
What does Quantum Theory define?
the allowed energy levels of electrons by four quantum numbers
What is a rule to remember when talking about quantum numbers?
No two electrons can have the same four quantum numbers
Explain the table stating what quantum numbers are
Electron in atom - Position Principal QN - Shell Second QN - Sub-shell Third QN - Direction Fourth QN - Spin
What is Principal Quantum Number? What’s the symbol for it?
n
It determines the main energy level. The number determine the size and energy of the shell
What is Angular Momentum Quantum Number? What is the symbol for it too?
Determines the shape of the sub-shell and is labelled as s,p,d. This can have values from 0 - (n-1)
What is the Second Quantum Number?
It’s also known as the Angular Momentum Quantum Number.
What are the values of s, p, d?
s - 0
p - 1
d - 2
