2.2 Network Devices Flashcards
What does a router do? (2 parts)
- Routes traffic between IP subnets
- makes forwarding decisions based on IP addresses
What do switches do?
- forward traffic received based on data-link address
- an example of a bridge
What is a more modern and advanced example of a bridge?
A switch
What is a benefit of using switches? (hint - Arago note)
they improve network performance by dividing a given network segment into separate collision points
Difference between managed vs unmanaged switches
Unmanaged: - few config. options
- no VLAN options
- little to no integration with other devices
- low price point
Managed: -traffic prioritization
- external management (SNMP)
- post-mirroring m- capture packets
- higher price point
What kind of traffic gets highest priority in a managed switch?
Voice traffic
What is the general function of an access point?
To provide a WiFi signal when a reliable signal from a wireless router is not available
What is the difference between a wireless router and a wireless access point?
A wireless router may or may not be able to connect to the internet; while a wireless access point can either provide a reliable connection when the router cannot provide a sufficient connection, or when the router has no WiFi connectivity.
What sort of network can a cloud-based network controller be used to control?
A wireless LAN
How do firewalls filter traffic?
By port #
What layer do firewalls operate on?
OSI Layer 4
How does a firewall protect traffic between websites?
By encrypting traffic in and out of network.
What happens when traffic passed through a proxy?
The proxy receives a request to send traffic to a client, check that client, then sends it over to you.
Where on a network’s infrastructure does a firewall usually sit?
Ingress/egress
What is the component that every network device needs to connect to the internet?
A network interface card (NIC)
