2.2:linear equations Flashcards
linear function
A function whose graph is a line
Linear equation
A solution to the linear equation is any ordered pair that makes the equation true.
Dependent variable
Y depends on the value of x
Independent variable
x value can be changed
y- intercept
the point at which the line crosses the y axis
x- intercept
a line is the point at which the line crosses x axis
standard form of a linear equation
is Ax + By = C where A,B and c are real numbers and A an B arn’t 0
Slope
a nonverticle line is the ratio of the vertical change to a corresponding horizontal change.
point- slope form
the equation of a straight line in the form y − y1 = m(x − x1) where m is the slope of the line and (x1, y1) are the coordinates of a given point on the line — compare slope-intercept form.
slope- intercept form
the way of writing the equation of a line so that the slope (steepness) and y-intercept (where the line crosses the vertical y-axis) are immediately apparent.
