2.2 linear equations Flashcards
linear function
A function whose graph is a line.
linear equation
two variables is an equation that can be written in the form ax+by=c.
Dependent Variable
If a function is defined by an equation using the variables x and y, where y represents output values, then y is the dependent variable.
Independent Variable
If a function is defined by an equation using the variables x and y, where x represents input values, then x is the independent variable.
point- slope form
the point- slope form of an equation of a line y-y1=m (x-x1), where m is the slope of the line and (x1,y1) is a point of the line.
x- intercept
The point at which a line crosses the x-axis is an x- intercept.
Y- intercept
The point at which a line crosses the Y-axis is a Y-intercept.
Standard form of a linear equation
the standard quiz of a linear equation is Ax+ By=C, where A, B, and C are real numbers, and A and B are not both zero.
Slope
the slope of a non vertical line is the ratio of the vertical change to a corresponding horizontal change. the slope of a vertical line is undefined.
Slope- intercept form
The slope- intercept form of an equation of a line is y=mx+b, where M is the slope and B is the Y-intercept.
